Mallika R.E. 124 (City of 1905)

📍 Kanchanaburi, Sai Yok

Step back to the Siam of King Rama V: a meticulously recreated 1905 town where you change into period dress, swap modern baht for old-style coins, and eat, shop, and wander among wooden houses and canals as the country looked a century ago.

West of town, Mallika R.E. 124 recreates a whole Siamese town of 1905 — Rattanakosin Era year 124 — from the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), the era that saw the abolition of slavery and the start of modern Siam. It’s part open-air museum, part immersive theme park, and a great deal of fun.

Why It’s Interesting

You can rent a period costume at the entrance, change your money for the town’s old-style token currency, and then simply live in 1905 for a few hours: wandering streets of teak houses and shophouses, crossing canals on wooden bridges, watching artisans at work, and eating traditional snacks bought with your token coins. It’s photogenic, hands-on, and a refreshing change of pace from the valley’s waterfalls and war history — especially good with kids.

Getting There

It’s signposted off the road west toward Sai Yok, near Prasat Muang Sing and the Ban Kao National Museum, so the three combine neatly into a culture-and-history day out from Kanchanaburi.
