Stand-Up Paddleboarding on the River Kwai
📍 Kanchanaburi, Mueang Kanchanaburi
Glide the gentle green current of the Kwai past floating raft houses, riverside temples, and the famous war bridge — Kanchanaburi's calm, scenic water makes it one of Thailand's most beginner-friendly stand-up paddleboarding runs.
The River Kwai through Kanchanaburi is wide, slow, and gorgeous — and increasingly, the best way to experience it is standing up, on a board. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has taken off here, and the town’s gentle current and string of riverside sights make it a near-perfect place to learn or to log a relaxed few kilometres.
Why It’s Interesting
From the water, the whole valley opens up: you drift past floating raft houses, longtail boats, riverbank temples, and — on the longer downriver trips — right up to the Bridge on the River Kwai, seeing the famous black spans from an angle almost no one else does. Local operators run friendly beginner lessons as well as half-day paddles, with boards, paddles, leashes and flotation vests provided. It is exactly the kind of unhurried, on-the-water afternoon Kanchanaburi does so well.
Best Time to Visit
Aim for the cool season, November to February, when the river runs calm and clear and the mornings are cool — ideal for a steady, scenic paddle. In the peak of the rainy season the flow is higher and faster, so check conditions and go with a local guide if you’re new to moving water.
