Wat Tham Mangkon Thong (Dragon Cave Temple)
📍 Kanchanaburi, Mueang Kanchanaburi
A riverside temple famous for a 'floating nun' who once meditated adrift on the water, with a long dragon-railed stairway climbing to a cool limestone cave of Buddha images — a peaceful, offbeat stop just across the river from town.
Across the Mae Klong from Kanchanaburi, Wat Tham Mangkon Thong — the “Golden Dragon Cave Temple” — earned its fame from an unusual sight: a nun who could meditate while floating on her back on a temple pool, a spectacle that once drew crowds and gave the place its enduring nickname.
Why It’s Interesting
Beyond the legend, it’s simply a lovely, low-key temple to wander. A long stairway flanked by sinuous naga (dragon) balustrades climbs the hill behind the wat to a limestone cave full of Buddha images, cool and dim and quiet. Down below, the grounds spread out among the trees with views toward the river. It rarely sees a crowd, which is much of its charm.
Getting There
It lies on the west side of the Mae Klong a short drive from the centre, and slots neatly into a loop with the dragon-mouthed Wat Ban Tham and the hilltop Wat Tham Suea. Dress modestly, as at any active temple.
