Elephants World

📍 Kanchanaburi, Mueang Kanchanaburi

An ethical sanctuary on the River Kwai where 'we work for the elephants, not the other way around' — no riding, no shows, just feeding, bathing, and walking beside rescued and elderly elephants for a day in the forest.

On the bank of the River Kwai north of town, Elephants World is a sanctuary built on a simple, humane idea — “we work for the elephants, not the elephants for us.” Founded in 2008 by a Thai vet, it gives a home to rescued, injured, and elderly elephants, many retired from logging or trekking camps.

Why It’s Interesting

There’s no riding and no performing. Instead you spend the day as a helper: preparing and feeding mountains of fruit and sticky-rice balls, cutting sugar cane, walking with the herd through the trees, and bathing them in the river — getting thoroughly, happily muddy in the process. It’s hands-on, genuinely educational, and a model of the kind of elephant tourism worth supporting, with the day’s fees going straight to the animals’ food and care.

Getting There

It’s in Wang Dong, north of Kanchanaburi toward the Srinakarin valley, reached by car or on the sanctuary’s own transfers. Programmes are limited in size and must be booked in advance, so plan ahead — the cool season from November is the most comfortable time for a full day with the herd.
